Time is a limited precious and curious resource.  Every day all of us get 24 a day and we get to decide how to spend those 24 hours. What do you plan to do with your time this summer?  Sleep? Binge watch on every show on Netflix?  Watch every telenovela on TV?  How you decide to spend your time is your decision, but it is important to know that your decisions about the summer time have important consequences for your future.  If you are smart with your time during the summer those consequences can be VERY GOOD and open great doors of opportunity for your future.  Some good words to remember as we near the summer time come from Oprah Winfrey who once said, “You must feed your mind with lecture materials, thoughts, and ideas that will continue to open new possibilities for you.”   I want to encourage you to continue learning this summer and to maximize the time you spend during your summer vacations.

Why focus so much on the summer time?  Summer time is actually a very important time in your intellectual development because it gives you an opportunity to break the routine from the regular learning experiences you have in the classroom.  During summer you have a wonderful opportunity to learn about the things you want to learn about – not the things somebody else is telling you to learn about.  For example, do you want to become a software engineer? This summer check out free coding lessons on codeacademy.com. The sky is the limit – during the summer you have a wonderful opportunity to continue learning in so many different ways.  I am referring to the learning that happens when you engage in the type of activities that involve other aspects of your intellect, for instance, your personality, abilities, talents, and personal interest.  Why sit around the house the entire day when you can participate in a TON of exciting activities during the summer?  So get out there and engage in activities that will teach you more about yourself and the person you wish to become in the future.  Use this time to become a better person, use this time to prepare for a brilliant future.  Choose to make the most of your time this summer and watch the doors of opportunity open for your future.

Sabia usted que acorde a estudios hechos por la “Asociación Nacional de Aprendizaje de Verano” aquellos estudiantes que participan en actividades de verano demuestran una habilidad mas grande en su desarrollo académico el siguiente año escolar.  Se ha comprobado que aquellos estudiantes que se involucran en alguna actividad intelectual durante el verano se desempeñan mejor no solamente en lectura, matemáticas, pero también en exámenes estandarizados como el ACT o el SAT.  Si deseamos que estos jóvenes estén listos para los desafíos académicos que vienen en el futuro, debemos pensar acerca cómo ayudarles a aprovechar al máximo su tiempo durante el verano.  Sera muy importante que como padres de familia identifiquemos oportunidades para que nuestros hijos/hijas puedan seguir desarrollando sus talentos durante el verano.  Existen muchas oportunidades en nuestra comunidades que pueden ayudarles a ellos/ellas a seguir desarrollando su carácter.  Algunas sugerencias incluyen:

• Ligas deportivas durante el verano

• Organizaciones de servicio comunitario en su cuidad

• Visitas a parques zoológicos o de conservación natural

• Clases para aprender un lenguaje nuevo

• Oportunidades para aprender a tocar un instrumento musical

Las posibilidades existen no importa donde vivamos, lo importante es que como padres de familia ayudemos a nuestros hijos/hijas a aprovechar su tiempo durante las vacaciones de verano.  Es importante que ellos aprovechen su tiempo durante el verano porque esto tendrá una efecto positivo en su desarrollo académico.

There’s no doubt Nelson Mandela is correct about his assertion that education can help to change the world.  However, sometimes thinking about the whole world can be a little daunting so let us think a little closer to home and let me borrow the words from Mr. Mandela to say that Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change YOUR world.  Pursuing a college degree can change not only your life but the life of those around you too.  It is for this reason I wish to share with you the steps you need to follow during fall semester in order to be ready for college.  Make sure that you involve your parents in this process – especially if they have not been to college.  They will need information to understand and support your dream of going to college.  Think of the process of going to college like a great adventure that will bring many questions, triumphs, challenges, and happiness.  So…Are you ready to start your adventure?

September – Create a list of the institutions you wish to attend and plan a visit to their campus:

Start in September by creating a list of institutions you wish to attend next year.  This is an important steps because it will help you to clarify your goals and focus your energies in a more efficient way.  It will be important for you to visit some of the universities you wish to attend.   Visiting the campus of those opportunities you are considering will help you to learn a lot about the differences and benefits of attending each institution.  Make sure your parents participate in this step.  They will appreciate knowing a little more about the institutions you wish to attend next year.

October – Complete your applications and register to take the ACT.

The process of applying to college can appear to be daunting, but in reality is pretty easy if you allow yourself enough time to work through it.  This is a step in which your high school counselors become great resources to you.  They have a lot of experience and can guide you in the right direction to find tools that will assist you to achieve success.  Make an appointment to see your academic advisors and ask for their assistance in the application process.  Another important step in October will be to register and participate in the ACT exam.  Check their website to learn more about the upcoming dates for the ACT.  Also remember to prepare for this exam – cramming the night before is probably not the best way to prepare.  Check with your public library to see if you can check out books related to ACT preparation.  

November – Apply to many scholarships:

I have met many students who wait until February to apply for scholarships…sorry but if you wait until February you missed the boat.  The best months to apply for scholarships are October, November, and December.  These are the months when you will see deadlines for some of the biggest scholarships for companies like Coca Cola, Nike, McDonalds, etc.  Start your scholarship search early and allow yourself enough time to create a solid application.  Remember that you will be competing with many other students for some of those scholarships – you want your work to speak great things about you.

December – Explore careers:

Use the month of December to explore your career options.  Don’t leave your career choice to chance.  Make sure that you are choosing a career that is using your talents, abilities, personality, traits, and skills.  Do your research about those careers you wish to pursue and make an effort to meet professionals in those areas.  Connect with your counselors about opportunities to meet professionals in your city.  You may learn about options you perhaps have not yet considered.

During our next edition we will speaking about growth and fixed mindsets and how they can affect our performance at school.

With the Olympic games just around the corner allow me the make the following analogy – Imagine you are running the marathon race in the Rio Olympics.  During this marathon you will be running for 26 miles with hundreds of other competitors.  You have prepared extensively for the 26 miles with effort, sweat, hard work, and dedication.  You are ready to compete for every single mile until the finish line.   During the day of competition you notice something happening as you move through the race.  Many other competitors are beginning to slow down.  You see some give up after 10 miles, others after 15 miles.  These competitors did not prepare for the full race.  Now that much of the competition has given up – is only you and a few other competitions left.  You are about to reach mile 22 of the race.  This is when you notice another curious thing happening – other runners are picking up their pace!  You wonder how other runners even have any energy left in them to pick up the pace – However, pick up the pace they do and you start to see who has truly prepared for the race. The runners racing with you on the last mile of the race have distinguished themselves because they have the stamina and discipline to keep fighting through fatigue and tiredness.  All of you have demonstrated a character quality that separates successful people from many others – PERSISTENCE.  It is the persistence to finish strong that finally takes you over to the finish line with the handful of runners still on the race.

Running a marathon race is not that much different from your experience of being in school.  Think about it – you and your classmates started in the same manner.  Each month that has passed by can be considered a mile in the race.  It is at this point in the race that you have seen some of your classmates already give up.  Their bodies may be present in the classroom but their minds have already lost the race.  You see others starting to feel the burn and beginning to slow down, but you also see others entering the last mile picking up their pace.  Where do you find yourself at this point in the semester? Those students who demonstrate the ability to continue despite difficulty are revealing they possess the character quality of persistence.

But what is persistence and how do we develop it?  Persistence is simply the continuation in a course of action despite difficulty or opposition.  However, continuing despite difficulty or opposition is easier said than done.  Persistence to finish a race is developed like a muscle.  You must exercise everyday!  The persistence necessary to succeed in the big moments in our life develops over time when we conquered smaller day-to-day situations that require persistence.  For instance, persistence may be required from you today to finish your math, biology, or chemistry homework.  Persistence may be required from you today to help your parents clean the house even though you prefer to be playing video games.  Persistence may be required from you to prepare for a big exam.  Persistence may be required from you to finish strong this academic school year.

The important thing about developing a strong sense of persistence for yourself is that it will be always come to your aide when you face a difficult situation in the future.  No matter whether you find yourself having problems in college or your future professional career – you will be able to overcome situations easier than most people because you have developed a strong sense of persistence over time. 

The moral of the story is the following – You are about to enter the last mile of the academic year.  It is on this mile that you will demonstrate your commitment to your dreams.  Pick up the pace towards the finish line! ECHALE GANAS!

• Aquellas personas que han demostrado la característica de  persistencia la han desarrollado de la misma manera que se desarrolla un musculo – con mucho esfuerzo, entrenamiento, y consistencia.

• Como estudiante tu puedes desarrollar esta cualidad haciendo cosas simples como: terminar tu tareas a tiempo, ayudar a tus padres a limpiar la casa, o estudiar para tus exámenes.  Estas acciones te ayudaran a desarrollar un sentido de persistencia que te ayudara en tu futuro académico y profesional.

• Otra manera en la cual puedes demonstrar tu persistencia es terminando bien lo que empezaste este año académico.  No te desamines y no te des por vencido.  Es ahora cuando debes demonstrar el compromiso que tienes para alcanzar tu sueños.

La influencia de nuestros padres de familia en nuestras vidas es indisputable.  El ejemplo que un padre de familia le da a sus hijos/hijas tiene un efecto que se puede extender por generaciones.  Aunque quizás no hemos notado, pero nosotros debemos nuestra ética de trabajo, perseverancia, algunos de nuestros hábitos, y nivel de aspiraciones al ejemplo que recibimos de nuestros padres.

Es por esta razón que independientemente de su nivel académico la influencia que usted tiene como padre de familia puede hacer una gran diferencia en el éxito académico de sus hijos.  Las acciones y palabras con las cuales usted apoye a su hijo/hija valen mucho más que el simple hecho de tener un diploma universitario.

Durante mi experiencia ayudando a estudiantes Latinos a llegar a la universidad, muchos padres de familia me han hecho la siguiente pregunta: “¿Cómo puedo ayudar a mis hijos a mejorar su desempeño académico?”  En respuesta a esta pregunta quiero recomendar dos maneras fáciles en las cuales usted puede ayudar al desempeño académico de sus hijos/hijas y su preparación hacia la universidad.  

1. Establezca un ambiente de estudio en el hogar:

Este es un aspecto en el desarrollo académico de sus hijos que muchas veces damos por hecho.  Muchos estudios en el campo de arquitectura comprueban que el ambiente que nos rodea y en el cual nosotros vivimos e interactuamos tiene un efecto profundo sobre nosotros.  Nuestros alrededores tienen la capacidad de hasta poder afectar nuestros sentimientos!  De la misma manera, el lugar donde su estudiante hace sus tareas y estudia tiene un efecto sobre ellos y su rendimiento académico.  Con la colaboración de su hijo/hija busque un lugar en su hogar el cual puedan dedicar exclusivamente al propósito de estudio.  ¿De que servirá esto? Esto ayudara a sus hijos/hijas a entrenar su mente y facilitar el estudio.  Al crear un  El un lugar dedicado específicamente al estudio ellos/ellas crearan un contexto en el cual se sabe que cada vez que van a hacia ese lugar es ahí donde se estudia.

2. Preste mucha más atención al proceso y no el resultado.  Ayude a su estudiante a enfocarse en una mentalidad de crecimiento.

Recuerde la ocasión más reciente cuando su hijo/hija le enseño buenas calificaciones.  ¿Cuáles fueron las palabras que usted utilizo para describir el éxito de su hijo/hija? La manera en la cual usted se expresa acerca del éxito  de sus hijos/hijas tiene una gran influencia.  Carol Dweck, psicóloga de la universidad Stanford, ha hecho investigaciones acerca de la existencia de dos mentalidades.  Una mentalidad se llama “mentalidad fija”.  En este tipo de mentalidad un estudiante está interesado en nada más demostrar con A+ que ellos tienen una capacidad intelectual. Su autoestima está directamente conectado a su capacidad para sacarse buenas notas.  En esta mentalidad el estudiante está interesado solamente en crear una imagen de éxito.  Si alguna vez el estudiante de mentalidad fija no se desempeña como ellos desean – puede tener un efecto negativo en su autoestima.  El problema con esta mentalidad es que un estudiante no siente la necesidad de tomar riesgos necesarios para su crecimiento porque ellos no quieren ser percibidos como perdedores.  Es una mentalidad que puede limitar muchísimo la habilidad de un joven para aprender. 

Por otra parte, existe la “mentalidad de crecimiento”.  Estudiantes con esta mentalidad están más interesados en aprender de sus errores y mejorar su intelecto.  La autoestima de estos estudiantes no está ligada a sus calificaciones. Estudiantes con esta mentalidad trabajan duro y le echan ganas -  pero ellos/ellas no temen al fracaso porque entienden que esto es parte del proceso de aprendizaje.  ¿Cómo podemos ayudarles a desarrollar una mentalidad de crecimiento? Celebremos el proceso y no el resultado.  La próxima vez que su hijo/hija de enseñe buenas calificaciones – Enfóquese en como el esfuerzo, la disciplina, y el trabajo duro han sido la clave para alcanzar ese resultado.  De esta manera usted le estará enseñando a su hijo/hija a valorar la dedicación, el esfuerzo, y la persistencia que se requieren para alcanzar nuestros objetivos.

La influencia que ustedes tienen como padres de familia para ayudar a estos jóvenes es muy grande.  Intente implementar estas dos recomendaciones en su hogar y vera como el desempeño académico de sus hijos/hijas mejorara de una manera muy rápida.  VAMOS A ECHARLE GANAS!

Have you ever wondered about the relationship between talent and intelligence?  Are people born with a set of talents and abilities that will determine their level of success in life?  Or is talent simply a starting point from which intelligence is the result of hard work and dedication?  The answers to these questions can tell you a lot about the way you see your own potential and the possibilities that exist in your future.  Pay close attention to the words you use to describe yourself and the way you think about your own intelligence/talent.  The internal dialogue you use to describe the future has a tremendous power over the decisions you will make.  What does a conversation about internal dialogue has to do with going to college?  It has everything to do with going to college!  If you do not believe that you can reach higher education – you have already limited the possibilities of reaching this goal.  On the contrary, if you believe in your capacity to reach bigger opportunities – you will search for a way to reach those big opportunities in your life.  Believe in your own intellectual capacity and the power you have to reach the dreams and goals you have set for your future.

On the other hand, students, play close attention to the words other people use to describe your future.  Be careful and stay away from those who do not believe or try lowering expectations for your future.  If not careful – those expectations can creep up on you and start becoming your reality.  Remember that you are capable of accepting or rejecting what has been given to you in words.  Reject those words that are not building you up and accept/embrace those words that match your dreams and aspirations for a future in college.

In the same manner, parents, what are the words you use to describe the potential and the future of your children?  Parents, expressing your high hopes and dreams for the academic future of your children will go a long way in motivating them to succeed in college.  Communicate to your sons/daughters your belief in their ability to succeed academically and reach a greater level of success.  My experience working with hundreds of Latino families has taught me that your sons and daughters are listening and they will respond positively to your encouragement.

Pay close attention to your internal dialogue.  It is like a fuel that has the power to propel you towards your dreams

Cuáles son las palabras que usas para describir tu futuro? Se cuidadoso de la manera en la cual te expresas de tu futuro porque tiene la capacidad de poder limitar tu potencial.

De la misma manera, padres de familia, cuáles son las palabras que ustedes usan para describir el potencial y el futuro de sus hijos/hijas?  Las palabras que ustedes usan para expresarse acerca de la capacidad y el talento de sus hijos/hijas pueden apoyar a sus hijos durante este proceso de preparación a la universidad.  Usen palabras que expresen sus grandes esperanzas y expectativas para el futuro de sus hijos/hijas.  Comuníqueles a ellos/ellas que usted cree en su capacidad de poder alcanzar un futuro mejor y la capacidad que ellos tienen para lograr grandes cosas en su futuro.  La experiencia me ha indicado que ciertamente ellos/ellas escuchan e internalizan las palabras que usamos para describir su futuro. 

Las palabras que usamos para describir nuestro potencial son muy importantes porque actúan como combustible para nuestro futuro.

Stop for a minute and read both quotes carefully one more time.  Making a decision about student loans is similar to the situations described in the quotes.  Some students make uninformed decisions and hope everything turns out ok – which 99% of the time never does.  Or some students take time and do their homework before making a decision and therefore remain in control of their circumstances.

The purpose of the column today is simply to bring awareness about the need for doing your homework and consider all of the circumstances before you make decisions about whether student loans are the best option to finance your education.

Nowadays, going to college will require many of us to seek financial aid.  There are many students that will need student loans in order to invest in their future.  If you are one of those students thinking about students loans – make sure to consider carefully all of the details and conditions that come with a student loan.  The more you and your parents know about this topic will permit all of you to make better decisions about your financial future.  Remember, the goal IS NOT to achieve an education at the expense of extreme debt.  The goal IS to obtain an education and be able to thrive after you have achieved your professional degree.  The goal is to become a responsible borrower.  Scan the following QR code using your smartphone and check out a quick 2 min. video on what it means to become a responsible borrower.

Understanding the different types of Federal Student Loans:

Federal student loans are student loans provided by the government.  They are usually called “Direct Loans”.  There are 3 different types of Direct Loans provided by the federal government.

Subsidized Direct Student Loans:  The most important thing you must know about these types of loans is that you don’t accumulate interest during the time you are a student.  This is probably the best type of loans you can get as a student.  Interest begins to accumulate once you graduate school.

Un-Subsidized Direct Student Loans: These types of loans do accumulate interest from the moment you receive the funds.  Be careful on how much un-subsidized loan you take out.  Interest can build pretty quickly over the years.

Direct PLUS student loan:  This is your last resort.  This is a loan that is taken out by your parents in order to pay for your education.  The important thing you must know is that YOUR PARENTS are responsible for paying this loan.  Consider this option carefully.

El gobierno federal ofrece 3 typos de prestamos estudiantiles: 

1) Prestamos con Subsidiados Direct:  Estos son prestamos los cuales no acumulan interés durante el tiempo que el estudiante este matriculado en la escuela. 

2) Prestamos sin subsidio Direct: Estos son prestamos los cuales acumulan interés durante el tiempo que los estudiantes están en la universidad.

3) Prestamos Direct PLUS:  Este es un préstamo que se hace a nombre de los padres para que el estudiante pueda pagar por gastos que no fueron cubiertos por otros tipos de ayuda financiera.  Usa esto nada mas como un último recurso para costear tu educación.

The college admission process is all about timing and your success depends largely on the ability to follow through with certain important steps.  One of those important steps is the completion of the FAFSA or the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.  This is the form you will need to complete with your parents in order to request financial aid from the government.  What can FAFSA do for you? The government uses the FAFSA to determine how much financial aid you can borrow for your education.  If you are interested in receiving the most amount of financial aid possible for your education, there is one thing you need to remember – deadlines are VERY important.  The FAFSA has a priority deadline of March 1, 2017. Please take a moment to pause and place a reminder about this important date on your phone.  By submitting your application by the priority deadline you will guarantee that your application is considered for the greatest amount of aid possible.  The difference between submitting your FAFSA on March 1, 2017 and March 2, 2017 can be thousands of dollars in financial aid.  If there is ever a time when the old saying of “time is money” rings true – this is it.

How to fill out the FAFSA?  It takes most people about 30 minutes to fill out the FAFSA.  Scan the following QR code with your smartphone to watch a short 2 min video on how to fill out the FAFSA. 

The video will give you a list of all the information you need in order to complete the form online.

“But wait…I still need help”

There is plenty of help out there to assist you and your parents to fill out the FAFSA.  Some cities in Iowa will be hosting “College Goal Sunday” events in February and March.  Trained volunteers will be on hand to provide free assistance on how to fill out the FAFSA.   Are you curious to know if “College Goal Sunday” is coming to your city?  Scan the following QR code to learn about the dates and locations for events in 2017.

El gobierno federal ofrece ayuda financiera a personas que desean seguir con sus estudios universitarios.  Para aplicar debes completar la Solicitud Gratuita de Ayuda Federal para Estudiantes que por sus siglas en Ingles se describe como FAFSA.  El FAFSA es utilizado para determinar cuanto dinero se le puede otorgar a un estudiante.  La fecha limite para completar la aplicación es 1 de Marzo, 2017.

Completar el FAFSA toma cerca de 30 minutos.  En el caso de que usted y su hijo/hija necesiten ayuda completando su aplicación, procuren asistir a unos de los eventos llamados “College Goal Sunday”.  Estos son eventos gratuitos organizados por el estado de iowa para ayudar a los estudiantes y a sus familias a completar el FAFSA.  En estos eventos ustedes contaran con la ayuda de voluntarios capacitados para ayudarles y responded cualquier pregunta que ustedes tengan acerca de el FAFSA.

Anime a su hijo/hija a comunicarse con sus consejeros académicos en la preparatoria.  Ellos/ellas serán un gran recurso en preparación para completar el FAFSA.

Take a moment today to send a social media message to somebody you know is a college freshman.  Ask them the following question:  What is the one thing you wish you could have done before you went off to college? Let me take a wild guess here and write that many of them will respond: “I wish I had applied for more scholarships.”

The good news for you is that winter break is the PERFECT time to search, prepare, and submit scholarship applications that will assist you to pay for college.  Another advantage of preparing during winter break is that many large scholarship awards are due in January.  Certainly make sure to take some time to rest, but also make sure to schedule time to take care of business.  Olympic Athlete Jesse Owens once said, “We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort.” Mr. Owen’s words perfectly describe the process of applying for scholarships.  This will be a process that will require your determination, dedication, and self-discipline.  Keep in mind that you have many people around you willing to help you through this process.  Connect with your guidance counselors and teachers at school.  Ask for their guidance and assistance through this process.

In this edition of La Esquina De La Educación I wish to bring to your attention 2016-2017 scholarships available at the national level and your own district through your counselors’ web pages.  Check constantly with your counselors about new opportunities or updates about existing opportunities.  There are definitely a lot of great opportunities out there waiting for you…Échale Ganas! But before your start keep in mind the following tips:

Don’t overwhelm yourself with choices.  Start with a list of five scholarships

Give yourself breathing room by striving to submit paperwork two days before the scholarship is due.

If your application requires an essay - have at least two counselors/teachers take a look at your essay.

Apply, Apply, Apply!
