READY…SET…GO!

“Destiny is no matter of chance. It is a matter of choice. It is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved.”

The time is here! A new school year full of potential and opportunities for your future has finally arrived.  This is the perfect time to establish a great reputation in your classes and to get organized so you can do your best in this academic year.  The beginning of the school year is also the perfect time to start thinking about the future and the goals you wish to reach in your life.  This is the reason today’s column is dedicated to giving you pointers on how to begin the college admission process.  The college admission process requires you to complete important steps that need to be completed in a careful and timely manner.  But as the ancient Chinese proverb says – The trip of 1,000 miles starts with one step – in the same way your path to college begins with your college application.  You ought to know that time is everything in your process of going to college.  To illustrate this point, imagine that you are waiting for the bus.  At the bus station you will bump into three groups of people:  1) those who arrive super early to catch the bus, 2) those who arrive just in time to catch the bus, and 3) those who go arrive to late to the bus station and therefore missed the bus.  So…what does waiting for the bus has to do with your application process?  You see, the first group of people arriving super early to the bus station are like to students who get early in the game of college. They apply and submit applications as soon as the school year starts. They maintain communication with their teachers and high school advisors.  They are ready and they have allowed themselves enough time to get their stuff done.  The second group of people is like the student who waits until the last minute to get anything done.  This is the student who will barely make it to college and will probably not get as much financial assistance if he had taken the time to prepare.  The last group of people who missed the bus is like those students who never bothered to do anything and now it is too late and opportunity has passed them by.  Unfortunately, this group of students could get their stuff together and they missed the bus.

The college application process works in the same way.  You must decide in what group of people you wish to be.  The sooner you start the better chances you will have to be accepted into the school you want and receive the assistance you need.  Today I wish to share with you four steps that will help

Time:  Allow enough time to complete your applications.  Every application you decide to complete will require a certain amount of time.  Do not let procrastination get in the way of your success.
Determine the details required from each application:  Every university has a different set of requirements.  Make sure you clearly understand what is required from the schools you have decided to submit applications.  This will help you to determine future steps.

Communicate with your counselors:  Talk often with your guidance counselors. They are one of the best and most awesome resources you have available at your high school.  Visit them often and ask them a lot of questions about the process.

Complete your applications at least two weeks before they are due.  Deadlines in the college application process are hard deadlines.  There are no extensions and no accommodations.  Don’t miss the bus!
